Arezzo

Detail showing Arezzo from the fresco cycle in S. Francesco, by Piero della Francesca

Arezzo is the quintessential mediaeval Tuscan city, its old centre looking just the same today as it does in the 15th century frescoes of Piero della Francesca. It’s a great place to wander, browse the little shops and monthly antiques market , or try local gastro treats in one of the bustling trattorie.

The churches and museums here house many fabulous art treasures, and you may find you need a few days if you want to see everything. Film lovers will remember that Arezzo was the location for The English Patient and Benigni’s La Vita e Bella.
